A Public Exhibit: Putting the U in Color (2013)
Putting the U in Color, was a funded, collaborative media + art exhibit that challenged biases targeting dark-skinned girls and women (and men) within the South Asian diaspora and the media. Curated by Jyoti Gupta, the show included media artifacts, such as film memorabilia and product packaging designs, children’s books, and advertisements.
In addition, four artists and media makers, including Jyoti, created original work, including a photography series, (ink-Jet on metallic warm paper) by Prince V. Thomas; a photograph entitled Starry Nights by Kavi Pradeep T.; a commissioned documentary film; and an interactive exhibit, The Eye of The Storm. The show was supported by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

An Interactive Installation: The Eye of the Storm
Eye of the Storm was an interactive installation in the art and media show, Putting the U in Color, that prompted people to share their first media memory that highlighted skin color as an important attribute.
Here’s a video entry received at the show. Sharing ranged from personal experiences of witnessing people get uncomfortable around ‘darker’ individuals….
…to descriptions of comic and graphic novels’ representation of dark individuals as evil.
